12.5 Relationships & Ripple Effects

Beyond “eating,” organisms form lasting partnerships — some helpful, some one-sided, some harmful. And because everything is connected, disturbing one species ripples out across the whole web.

Three Kinds of Relationship - Mutualismboth organisms benefit. Honeybee & flower: the bee gets nectar, the flower gets pollinated. - Commensalismone benefits, the other is unaffected. Orchid on a tree: the orchid gets support; the tree is unharmed. - Parasitismone benefits, the other is harmed. Tick on a dog: the tick gets blood; the dog gets skin irritation.

Be a Scientist: A.J.T. Johnsingh A.J.T. Johnsingh was a pioneering Indian wildlife biologist who studied forests “through the eyes of animals” using modern tracking. Working in Bandipur National Park, he showed that predators like tigers and leopards depend on prey (deer, wild boar) — proving that a healthy prey population is key to predator survival. He inspired many young people to study and protect India’s wildlife.

One change leads to another

The Ripple Through the Web Because food chains are interlinked, a small change cascades. Suppose pollution kills many pond plants: fewer plants → less oxygenfish die → fewer fish-eaters, but more insects (no fish to eat them) → insects spread to farms → farmers use more pesticides → which harm the environment further. One nudge, many consequences.

Activity 12.9 — The Frog-Leg Lesson A real example: in the 1980s India exported huge numbers of frog legs (the Indian bullfrog). With fewer frogs, the insects frogs eat multiplied, becoming crop pests — so farmers used more synthetic pesticides, harming soil, water and health. The Government of India eventually banned frog-leg export to stop the ecological damage. Removing one link in the web hurt the whole system.

Worked Example

In the chain Grass → Grasshopper → Frog → Snake, what happens to grasshoppers and snakes if all the frogs disappear?

Frogs eat grasshoppers, so with no frogs the grasshopper population rises (nothing eats them). Frogs are eaten by snakes, so with no frogs the snakes lose a food source and the snake population falls. One missing species disturbs the level below it (more grasshoppers) and the level above it (fewer snakes) — exactly the ripple effect.
