Nature of Matter: Elements, Compounds and Mixtures

The world is full of “stuff” — air, water, salt, steel, soil, sugar. This chapter sorts all of it into a clean scheme. Some things are just mixed together (mixtures), keeping their own properties; others are pure substances made of a single kind of particle. Pure substances split into elements — the simplest building blocks, like hydrogen, oxygen and gold — and compounds, where elements join chemically in fixed ratios to make something brand new (water from hydrogen and oxygen!). We’ll split water with electricity, char sugar to its elements, turn iron and sulfur into a compound, and learn to confidently label anything as an element, compound or mixture.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  • define a mixture and tell uniform from non-uniform mixtures (and recognise alloys);
  • explain what a pure substance is, in the scientific sense;
  • describe elements as substances that cannot be broken down, made of atoms, and sort them into metals and non-metals;
  • describe compounds as elements combined chemically in a fixed ratio, with new properties;
  • classify everyday substances as element, compound or mixture, and recognise minerals.
