1.3 The Investigator’s Toolkit
Every scientific investigation, from a child frying her first puri to a team tracking a cyclone, follows the same simple loop. It is worth knowing by heart.
The Investigation Loop
- Observe — notice something carefully. (A puri is thinner on one side.)
- Question — ask a specific, testable question. (Does the way I drop the dough decide which side stays thin?)
- Predict — make a reasonable guess at the answer. (Maybe the side that touches the oil first stays thinner.)
- Experiment — change one thing and watch what happens.
- Record — write down everything you see, smell, and measure.
- Explain — use your observations to improve your understanding — which usually sparks the next question.
It is a loop, not a line: step 6 sends you straight back to step 1.
Notice that observation sits at both ends. Science is grounded in what you actually see, not in what you wish were true. But it also needs imagination — the leap of the prediction, the creativity of designing a clever experiment.
The Root and the Kite The Curiosity textbook hides a small picture on each page: a root at the bottom of the left-hand pages, and a kite at the top of the right-hand pages. The root stands for staying grounded in careful, real observation; the kite stands for letting your ideas soar into the unknown. Good investigation needs both — solid ground and free flight. Lose the root and you are only guessing; lose the kite and you never ask anything new.
