Key Points
- Pressure is force per unit area (P = F ÷ A); its SI unit is the pascal (Pa) = N/m². A smaller area gives higher pressure (sharp knife), a larger area gives lower pressure (broad straps).
- Liquids exert pressure that increases with the height of the column and acts in all directions (so dams have broad bases and tall tanks give strong taps).
- Air has weight and exerts atmospheric pressure in all directions; it is huge, but we aren’t crushed because our internal pressure balances it.
- Wind is air moving from a region of high pressure to low pressure; a bigger pressure difference means a faster wind. Uneven heating of land and sea causes land and sea breezes.
- High-speed winds bring lower pressure — which can lift weak roofs (keep windows open in a storm).
- Thunderstorms form from moisture and strong winds; rubbing in clouds separates charge, and its sudden flow gives lightning and thunder. Lightning conductors protect buildings.
- Cyclones are spinning low-pressure storms over warm seas, with a calm eye at the centre; the IMD tracks them and warns us.

- Sink test. A boy lies flat on loose sand, then stands on it. In which case does he sink more, and why? (Hint: same weight, different area.)
- The elephant. An elephant weighing 20000 N stands on four feet, each 0.25 m². What pressure does it put on the ground?
- Two boats. Boat A (base 7 m²) carries 5 people; Boat B (base 3.5 m²) carries 3 people; each person weighs 700 N. Which boat’s base feels more pressure, and by how much?
- Suckers. A rubber sucker sticks to a smooth tile but not to a rough wall. Explain using air pressure.
- No insulator? Would lightning still happen if air were a good conductor of electricity? Why or why not?
