Every push and pull around you is a force — and forces are the reason anything starts moving, stops, speeds up, changes direction, or changes shape. This chapter builds the idea of force from scratch: what a force is, what it can do, and why it always takes two interacting objects. We sort forces into those that need contact (muscular force, friction) and those that act from a distance (magnetic, electrostatic, gravitational). Then we meet weight — the Earth’s pull measured with a spring balance — separate it carefully from mass, and finish by asking why some things float while others sink.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  • define a force as a push or pull arising from the interaction of two objects, and state its SI unit, the newton (N);
  • list the effects of a force — starting motion, changing speed, changing direction, and changing shape;
  • distinguish contact forces (muscular, friction) from non-contact forces (magnetic, electrostatic, gravitational);
  • explain weight as the Earth’s gravitational pull, measure it with a spring balance, and tell weight apart from mass;
  • explain buoyant force (upthrust) and why objects float or sink.
