There is a whole living world too small for your eyes to see — in a drop of pond water, a pinch of soil, even inside your own gut. This chapter follows the path humans took to reveal it: the lens, the microscope, and the discovery that every living thing is built from tiny units called cells. We will look inside plant, animal and microbe cells, climb the ladder from a single cell up to a whole organism, meet the great families of microorganisms, and discover how these invisible neighbours bake our bread, set our curd, enrich our soil, clean our waste, and make over half the oxygen we breathe.

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  • explain how the lens and the microscope opened up the invisible world, and who Hooke and Leeuwenhoek were;
  • describe the cell as the basic unit of life and name its main parts, comparing plant and animal cells;
  • relate the shape of a cell to the function it performs;
  • arrange the levels of organisation — cell → tissue → organ → organ system → organism;
  • identify the main groups of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, protozoa, algae) and how viruses differ;
  • give everyday examples of microbes that are helpful (curd, bread, manure, nitrogen fixation, oxygen) and harmful.
