12.2 From Individual to Ecosystem
Just as a body is built from cells up to a whole organism (Chapter 2), nature is organised in levels — from a single living thing up to an entire ecosystem.
The Ladder of Life in Nature

- An individual is a single organism (one fish).
- A population is a group of the same kind of organism living together in a habitat (all the fish of one kind in a pond).
- A community is all the different populations sharing a habitat (fish + frogs + lotus + microbes…).
- An ecosystem is the community together with its abiotic surroundings — living things interacting with air, water, soil, sunlight and temperature.
Activity 12.2 — Count a population Mark a 1 m × 1 m square in your school garden and count how many of each plant or animal you find. You might record 20 of one plant and only 5 of another — those numbers are the populations of those organisms in that space and time. (If a habitat held only one kind of organism, they’d all need the same food and water — leading to fierce competition and shortage.)
Everything interacts
What Makes an Ecosystem An ecosystem forms when the biotic and abiotic components of an area interact. Three kinds of interaction happen at once (Activity 12.4):
- biotic ↔︎ abiotic — earthworms live in moist soil; a fish lays eggs in water;
- abiotic ↔︎ abiotic — bright sunlight raises the day’s temperature and evaporates water;
- biotic ↔︎ biotic — a frog eats insects; a water snake eats fish.
The dependence runs both ways: plants need sunlight, CO₂ and water to make food — and in return plants release oxygen, their roots hold soil against erosion, and they keep the air cool and moist.
Two Kinds of Ecosystem Ecosystems come in two broad families: aquatic (ponds, rivers, lakes, seas) and terrestrial (forests, grasslands, farms — even a single big banyan tree). They can be huge or tiny, and they overlap — a river runs through forest, grassland and farmland, all interacting at once. (A farm is a human-made ecosystem.)
Ever Heard Of… Pollination A flower has male stamens (which release pollen) and female carpels. Wind, water, insects, bats and birds carry pollen from stamens to carpels — a biotic–biotic interaction called pollination, essential for making fruits and seeds. A pond study even found that ponds with fish had more flowering plants around them — proof that every organism in a community can matter, in surprising ways.
