Elements, compounds and mixtures aren’t just classroom labels — they’re the materials that build our world, and understanding them is the key to inventing new ones.

Building the World The air we breathe is a mixture; the water we drink is a compound; the iron and aluminium in bridges and vehicles are elements. Chemists combine elements into compounds to make medicines, vaccines and fertilisers; engineers blend metals into alloys like stainless steel — stronger and more durable than pure iron. Wood, steel and concrete are all mixtures. Knowing how matter is built is how we improve it.

A Step Further: A “Wonder” Material Graphene aerogel, made from carbon, is said to be the lightest material on Earth — so light a blade of grass can hold it. It’s extremely porous, so it soaks up a lot, which could make it brilliant for cleaning oil spills and for energy-saving coatings. Material science, born from understanding elements and compounds.

Minerals

What Are Minerals? Most rocks are mixtures of minerals. A mineral is a natural solid with a fixed chemical composition. A few — called native minerals — are pure elements (metals like gold, silver, copper; non-metals like sulfur, carbon). But most minerals are compounds of more than one element. Common ones include quartz, calcite, mica, pyroxene and olivine.

Minerals in Daily Life So much of what we use comes from minerals: cement is made from calcite, quartz, alumina and iron oxide; talcum powder comes from the mineral talc. Many metals we rely on are extracted from minerals.

Our Scientific Heritage: Dhokra Art The ancient Dhokra craft of Bihar and Odisha uses metals to cast beautiful figures of animals, people and nature. A design is shaped in beeswax, covered in clay to make a mould; the wax is melted out, and molten brass or bronze (alloys!) is poured into the hollow — giving Dhokra its strength and shiny golden colour. Elements, compounds and mixtures, turned into art.

What is not matter

The Limits of Matter Elements and compounds are the building blocks of matter — everything that has mass and takes up space. But not everything around us is matter! Light, heat, electricity, and even thoughts and emotions are real and important, yet they are not made of matter. Knowing what is and isn’t matter sharpens how we understand the world.
