Key Points
- Health means complete physical, mental and social well-being — not merely the absence of disease. Health and happiness are closely linked.
- We stay healthy through a good lifestyle (balanced diet, exercise, sleep, hygiene, no tobacco/alcohol) and a clean environment (clean air and water; the AQI tells us air quality).
- A symptom is what we feel; a sign is what can be seen or measured.
- Communicable diseases are caused by pathogens and spread (through air, water/food, or insect vectors); non-communicable diseases (diabetes, heart disease, cancer, asthma) come from lifestyle and environment and don’t spread.
- Deficiency diseases come from missing nutrients; long-lasting illnesses are chronic.
- Immunity is the body’s power to fight disease, run by the immune system. Vaccines train it in advance (acquired immunity) and are preventive, not curative.
- Antibiotics kill bacteria only — never viruses or protozoa. Fleming discovered penicillin (1928). Misusing antibiotics causes dangerous antibiotic resistance.

Think It Through
- Sort them. Group as communicable or non-communicable: cold & flu, typhoid, diabetes, asthma, chickenpox.
- A flu outbreak hits your class — some students are absent, others come coughing. (i) What should the school do immediately? (ii) How would you kindly respond if your benchmate starts showing symptoms? (iii) How can you protect yourself and others?
- Travel to a malaria area. What precautions would you take before, during and after the trip, and how would you explain mosquito nets to a younger sibling?
- The dengue trend. A hospital records monthly dengue cases that climb from 10 in January to 40 in June. Plot these as a line graph (a Chapter 12 skill!). In which month did cases rise fastest, and what season might explain the surge?
That last question is a reminder that science joins up: reading a health trend needs the data-handling skills you’ll build later, and the careful investigation habits from Chapter 1. With Part I complete, we now turn from living things to the forces and energy that shape the physical world.
